about

Two Moscow producers collaborate on an experimental EP inspired by drumming, and — surprise — there are no beats here. Zurkas Tepla, a master of anxiety-inducing, quasi-political nightmare ambiance makes his perhaps most club-influenced track and his first remix here, and Moa Pillar (who often crafts smart dancefloor-ready weapons) is at his most abstract. “Drumming” is a beautiful example of friendship, collaboration, and most importantly, communicating ideas across.

The project started from Zurkas’ obsession with the moment when live drummers go wonky while still keeping the groove — and that could be one of the main differences between electronic and live music, really. This original track, aptly titled “To Grab a Stick”, sparked Moa Pillar’s interest who just like his comrade had started out playing in rock bands (yes, his instrument of choice was drums). But unlike the slightly jungle-tinged Zurkas Tepla original, Moa Pillar’s original “Drumming” is an exercise in his own brand of deconstructed club music: staccato hits and hiccups that modulate into oblivion.
